New Moscow Expands to the South

The Russian government wants Moscow to be a global finance center by 2020. Moscow accounts for one quarter of Russia’s $1.9 trillion economy. However, a recent survey by the World Bank found Moscow to be the worst of 30 Russian cities to do business in. Moscow has found a solution by doubling its size and relocating its Federal offices to a new district.

Peter the Great moved the capital from Moscow to St. Petersburg in 1712, while Lenin made Moscow the capital city again in 1918 after the Bolshevik Revolution. “Moscow authorities are drawing up plans to move a number of official buildings, including the parliament and some of the government administration, out of the clogged centre to a "federal district" that would be built in a southeastern suburb.”

Moscow’s Traffic Congestion

The auto ownership went up dramatically in Moscow after the fall of communism in 1989. The major roads in the city have very little ground level activity, no grade level pedestrian crossings, uninviting pedestrian underpasses, no dedicated lanes for public transport and practically zero parking management.

Then with the arrival of the free market the rate of car ownership grew massively and as experienced before (in the United States before the Second World War and in Europe shortly after it) the consequences are the removal of tramways, the lack of segregated lanes for buses, and minimum pedestrian crossings to allow maximum space for car flows.”

Moscow’s Tentacles

The cities are sprouting tentacles as they grow and encroach upon the nearby countryside. Moscow is a perfect example. Yet, urbanity is not a modern phenomenon, but the spectacular growth of urban areas is. “In 1900, there were already more than a million Muscovites. The second million was added by 1925, and by 1960, Russia’s capital counted well over 5 million inhabitants.”

Moscow’s medieval core is surrounded by a set of ring roads. The Central Square Ring is the first, followed by the Boulevard Ring, the Garden Ring, the third and fourth rings and finally the Moscow Ring Road, known as MKAD which is a 10 lane highway and stretches for 110 km.

Adaptive Reuse of a Factory Building by Sergey Skuratov

Sergey Skuratov Architects recently won an international bid to design a new residential complex at a former factory building used for printing and publishing. The proposed project utilizes existing factory buildings and builds on its red-brick architecture. The central factory building will be remodeled into a café and an exhibition hall. “The building looks all the more stylish because the architects partially covered the brick volume with a metal hood. Yet another two volumes are designed as high-rise centerpieces – they help the authors to lift the industrial theme off the ground and make it enter into a dialogue with modern architecture.”

Three New Architecture Schools in Moscow

Moscow added three new schools of architecture in the past two years: the Strelka Institute of Media, Architecture and Design, the Higher School of Urbanism and most recently MARCH. The new schools are expected to “address the critical lack of thinking about development in Moscow, and to react to the savage and uncontrollable transformation that has afflicted the city after the fall of the regime, sacrificing large parts of the soviet and pre-soviet city to the architecture of fast consumption.”

MARCH is an independent school which was established in collaboration with the British School of Design and London Metropolitan University. It will offer a two year graduate program beginning in October 2012. It will focus on design and explore interdisciplinary projects through immersion in contemporary social, cultural, economic and political thoughts.
