Moscow’s Tentacles

The cities are sprouting tentacles as they grow and encroach upon the nearby countryside. Moscow is a perfect example. Yet, urbanity is not a modern phenomenon, but the spectacular growth of urban areas is. “In 1900, there were already more than a million Muscovites. The second million was added by 1925, and by 1960, Russia’s capital counted well over 5 million inhabitants.”

Moscow’s medieval core is surrounded by a set of ring roads. The Central Square Ring is the first, followed by the Boulevard Ring, the Garden Ring, the third and fourth rings and finally the Moscow Ring Road, known as MKAD which is a 10 lane highway and stretches for 110 km.
